I started looking for a product like this to display pictures from a server in my private wireless network. But iGala seems to be restricted to (a few) websites. I am not really interested in uploading my tons of pics first and then downloading them again. So my question is: is it possible, or will it be possible, to adress private pics databases?
Second: I am very enthusiastic about the display and its touchscreen features. But I would like to have more flexibility (I live in the Netherlands)and functionality for this product as a fast menu for simple domestic tasks as reading my webmail, showing news (in text or video), television remote, mp3 player and everything else that can be hooked up to my wireless network at home. I don't need a browser, but I would like to be able to build in some URLs that are important for me (unlike flickr for instance). When the menu is not used the photodisplay function would then act as screensaver, sort of.

Best regards,

Herrie

We are NOT only DPF manufactures. We are trying to make cool Web 2.0 gadgets. :)

We do have a high end solution that is being developed, which is a small tablet linux frame. It is a complicate project and we are working hard to make it happen. It will support a regular XP or Linux OS on it.

Answers to the wishes

Herrie:

First of all, thanks for your input.

The thinking behind the idea of downloading from the online folders are:
1. so that photos can be uploaded remotely: If I give this frame to my parents, I can upload the latest photos of my kids onto the frame without asking my parents to do anything.
2. so that I can upload photos to multiple frames at the same time: all my friends and families will see my latest photos once I update my online folder.

Multiple customers ask for the feature of local LAN sharing, which provides more convenient way of local uploading. We are evaluating options between bluetooth, Vista media sharing and few other choices.

It is always a dilemma to balance the features against usability. More features we pack in, more complicate it becomes, and more technical it becomes. That is the reason for us to stay away from the picture database access.

Answers to your 2nd question. We will open up this platform sometime in the future so that users can customize the frame to additional functionality. We are already working on a on-frame browser and video support. Accessing other devices on the wireless LAN may not be a simple task. Remote functionality will require hardware change. They are interesting suggestions. I am worried that not many other users are nearly as techie as you are.

Evolution

What you have is the first generation that is so basically RIGHT that it is evolving in this forum to multiple separate products.

Are you only a digital picture frame company?

Is it really such a stretch to change this into the Eee of tablet PC's? Make a higher end version with battery, expanded connectivity, browser, eReader, MP3, USB keyboard/mouse,... Easy for me to say I know, but think of the possibilities. You open up your market by orders of magnitude.
